Tryouts

Our Tryout dates are:

15s will be 11/10 @ 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM and 11/11 @ 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM

16s will be 11/10 @ 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM and 11/11 @ 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Tryouts can be a stressful and confusing time for players and parents.  We seek to alleviate some of this by providing dates and times that do not conflict with other club tryouts locally or in the region and being transparent with the region’s policies regarding the “Tryout and Signing Period” and “Open Tryout Period” (which are one in the same) which are stated below.

The “Open Tryout and Signing Period” posted by the Palmetto Region for the 2019 season are as follows:

14U and younger | Saturday, October 20 to Sunday, October 28, 2018 / Monday October 29, 2018 is a blackout Decision Day (no tryout, calls backs or activity)
15U and older | Saturday, November 3 to Saturday, November 11, 2018 / Sunday November 12, 2018 is a blackout Decision Day (no tryout, calls backs or activity)

There are a few steps you must take in order to tryout:

  1. You must register and pay with USA Volleyball at:
    1. Renewals: https://webpoint.usavolleyball.org/wp15/IntraLock/Login.wp
    2. New Members: https://webpoint.usavolleyball.org/wp/memberships/join.wp?mbr_ChapterID=25977
    3. If you do not play, this fee is refundable.
    4. You need to bring the following USA Volleyball Medical Release Form Notarized to tryouts:
    5. We suggest that you select “undecided” status so that you can try out for multiple clubs.
    6. If you are trying out for multiple clubs, you will need to complete this form and take to each tryout.

  2. You then need to register as a Charleston Academy Bronze Level member.
    1. This does not mean you are a Charleston Academy player or have received an offer.
    2. It means you are a member of our volleyball community that entitles you to try out with Charleston Academy, provides you with a tryout Charleston Academy t-shirt, adidas volleyball discounts to our official store and access to Charleston Academy events we hold in the community.
Learn more at our Charleston Academy Membership Page or register here.
  3. If you are extended an offer you must upgrade your membership to Gold Status to officially accept your offer.

FAQ About Charleston Academy Tryouts:

  1. Why are your tryout dates at the end or after the “Open Tryout and Signing Period”?
Our goal is to provide players and parents the best opportunity to tryout for as many clubs as they can.  To do this, we have chosen dates that do not conflict with other club try outs so players and parents have adequate time to drive between tryouts and have ample rest so players can perform their best at each tryout.  We chose to hold our tryouts at the end or after the cycle so we are not creating undue pressure for players to make a decision.  The region allows players to wait until the end of the tryout period to make their decision.
  2. What if I get an offer on the first weekend of tryouts from another club?
They can certainly accept that offer, but they are not required to by the region policy to do so.  They have until the end of the tryout period to make their decision and any offer from a club (or multiple clubs) cannot be rescinded until after the tryout period is over.
  3. Can a club rescind their offer in 48 hours?
Absolutely NOT!  The region clearly states players have until the end of the tryout period to make their decision and any offer from a club (or multiple clubs) cannot be rescinded until after the tryout period is over.
  4. Where do you have practices?
We will make this announcement in September
  5. How long do they last?
Typical training sessions will last 1.5-2 hours
  6. How often?
Our philosophy will differ from many clubs.  When not in tournament season, players will train 3-5 times a week with a great deal of sport performance training.  When in tournament season, players will still train 3-5 times a week, but will have many active recovery days.  The season is long and demanding so players need to prepare and recover properly.
  7. Are there practices over holidays?
We try not to train over the holidays, but there may be times we have to or may have tournaments over holiday weekends.
  8. Is there practice in the summer?
We plan to offer year round training for players.  We are preparing players for top Division I programs and they train year round.
  9. What are the team sizes and why?
We are basing selection on age groups, not teams.  We will have a floating roster policy that we will select up to 20 players per age group and players will compete for the top team each week.  This is no different from college, except in college they will be competing for spots each week across multiple age groups.
  10. What do you look for in a club player?
We are looking for commitment above all else.  If a player is committed to being better and competing, we can provide them the environment to develop.
  11. Can you play another sport if you are on a club volleyball team?
They can, but time away from our training/tournaments may not allow them to develop as fast as other players.  However, their are some players that will still develop as fast playing multiple sports.
  12. Is there equal playing time for all players?
NO.  Players will play based on their ability and their ability to influence match outcomes.  The best way for our players to be recruited is to play at the highest level and get results.  This helps establish the club on a national basis which in turns draws more attention to the players.  When the team wins, the club wins and then the players win!
  13. Does your club choose players based on who was on a team the year before?
NO.  Players are selected based on their commitment and ability.
  14. If my daughter misses a practice, will she be benched?
Possibly.  Valid reasons will not get you benched, but you may fall behind in your development which will see other players play ahead of you.  If it becomes a recurring issue and effects performance, the player may be relegated to the second team and/or may not play much or at all.  The coach, technical director and club director will establish clear policies on missing training and matches.
  15. What’s the travel commitment?
We have posted our travel season schedule and players are expected to make training and tournaments.
  16. Will my daughter have to miss school to attend tournaments?
Most likely.  We plan for players to travel and stay together just like they will in college.  Parents are welcome to travel separately and we will assist with accommodations.
  17. What’s the financial commitment?
We expect the all-in cost to be no more $3,000 per season.  This will include all costs for players, except for meals (although we may cater meals for players from time to time), including but not limited to player equipment (uniforms, knee pads, shoes, warmups, bags, etc.) which players will keep at the end of the season, tournament fees, coaching/training fees, hotel, travel and more.  Payments will be made through our membership program monthly at no more than $250 per month.  We reserve the right to further reduce this fee in part or whole.

“Open Tryout Period”
is defined as the block of days that players may tryout
with no expectations of having to make a commitment to a team/club,
nor can a team/club require a commitment from a player.

What you need to know about the Open Tryout and Signing Period” process:
from the Palmetto Region Web site at https://www.palmettoregionvb.org/tryout-policy

  1. If the Club offers tryouts after the deadlines below these rules do not apply.
  2. Teams/clubs may extend offers to players, but can not require commitment until signing date deadline. Once an offer is made, it may not be rescinded by the club until end of open tryout period or until player has communicated in writing acceptance or declined offer.
  3. Players have until signing date to make a decision, however, players may accept an offer at anytime during the “open tryout period”. After your decision, you are required to notify all clubs that you participated in a tryout within 6 hrs of your decision. Failure to do so can result in suspension and/or fine. If you’ve received team offers from all clubs after all your tryouts, your decision should be made within 48 hours of your last offer (if 48 hours falls before the end of the “open tryout period”) to help move the process on for other families and assist Club Directors on managing team needs.
  4. Clubs are required to make a players-parent contract available to both parties at time of tryouts for them to review. This should be signed by all parties within 48 hrs of a commitment. Both parties are responsible for keeping a copy of this in the event of dispute during the season. Appeals will not be considered without signed contracts.
  5. Club offers and communication of acceptance or decline from players must be dated and in writing, via verifiable electronic communication (e.g. email ,website database, etc). This will be required in event of dispute or complaint.
  6. If a player does not provide response to clubs by the deadline dates below, the club is not required to hold spot and these rules will not apply.
  7. If player is registered in USAV Webpoint as “undecided”, must change your club from undecided to the club you accepted offer. If you choose a club during registration and decided to change clubs, you must contact the region to change. members@palmettovb.com
  8. Clubs who extend a greater number of offers than there are open positions on a team, and subsequently indicating that those limited number of open positions will be filled on a first- come-first-serve basis, is not in the spirit of this rule and is therefore a violation.
  9. Upon conclusion of the “Open Tryout Period”, offers and commitments may take place with no expectation of a grace period or requirements of rules above.
  10. Clubs who are found to be in violation may be subject to fines and/or sanction.
